Getting good water in the water holding tank
We knew from the start that there were issues with the water coming from the well. We tested the water a number of times beginning when we bought the property. It was safe for drinking but had levels of iron and manganese that gave it a bad flavor. And these oxidized to leave a tan sediment that stained plumbing fixtures and clothes that we laundered.
We installed filters for the cold water in the kitchen sink and the water for the ice maker in the refrigerator. But these didn't help with dirty water in the shower, bath tub and toilets, which required daily cleaning. We filled five-gallon jugs at a neighbor's well for drinking - just as we had when we were in the trailer.
Additional levels of testing indicated that the best way to clean the water was with a filtration system. So, another unplanned expense.
Because the sediment had collected in the water holding tank, as soon as we had suitably filtered water we drained and cleaned the tank - all 1500 gallons!
It took several hours of pressure washing and draining to scour the inside clean. It was gratifying to see the dirty water draining into the drainage ditch.
Then we needed to refill it. Because using well water to refill it would tax the filtration system as well as the well pump, we called Water Buffalo to bring in fresh, clean, potable water.
It was a long time coming but we had clear, fresh tasting water for all our needs in the house.
