Changing the landscape
It is taking a long time to claim yard and garden from the natural growth and from the desolation generated by the construction activities. First we resolved to make a yard that looks like home.
We added a walkway from the driveway to the front deck, with native rocks and gravel. Adding grass sod to the front contributed a lot to the sense that we will someday have a nice lawn.
After completion of the dispersion trench we focused on clearing and leveling the back yard. We imported about 60 yards of top soil as a basis for leveling, filling and improving drainage. This included smoothing out the back-filling around the house and deck. This included smoothing out the back-filling around the house and deck.
And we made some progress in removing the pile of trash left over from clearing (by moving as much as we could to the larger trash pile to the west).
Some of our plans were affected by significant rainfall which kept the soil saturated and resulted in standing water where we hadn't created necessary drainage.
So when the soil dries out we will continue improving both appearance and drainage around the house. Later we'll sill and smooth the front yard east of the driveway. And there will be a few more native plants to add as well as care for last year's transplants.
